IRIS has a strategic goal of furthering the development of automated drilling. IRIS Energy focuses on the development of functions and services in this area, while UBBS seeks to support R&D and the industry’s need for an arena for testing out this. The awarding of NOK 20 million, which is 25% of the budget of DADPC (Demonstration of Automated Drilling Process Control) really put IRIS and UBBS on the R&D map in the field of automated drilling. The project is to demonstrate the value of fully automated drilling, the entire drill system is included.
Various industry players join forces as project partners in order to contribute to an important verification of the value of this investment. The value of automated drilling has until so far been based on the individual systems/component suppliers’ conviction concerning the contribution for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness with consequent cost reduction. This project will be able to prove, for the first time, the actual value of automated drilling control. At the time of writing, the partners are Statoil, Odfjell, RDS, Sekal and IRIS. Interest in the project has been surprisingly positive, and several more partners are in the midst of discussions concerning their participation.
This project will further contribute to put Ullrigg Drilling and Well Centre on the map as a unique fully automated laboratory in the field of drilling and wells.
